What Task 2 asks

CELPIP Writing Task 2 is a survey response: you are given a short survey question and several answer options, and you write a response explaining your choice and giving reasons. You have about 26 minutes and should write roughly 150-200 words.

A simple structure

  • State your choice in the opening sentence.
  • Reason 1 — explain with an example.
  • Reason 2 — add a second supporting point.
  • Conclude — briefly reinforce your view.

How it is scored (1-12)

Like Task 1, Task 2 is rated on task fulfilment, coherence, vocabulary and grammar. Strong responses pick a clear position, develop two distinct reasons, and use a range of sentence structures.

Survey question: Some cities ban cars in the city centre on weekends. Do you support this? I support banning cars in the centre on weekends. First, it makes the area safer and more pleasant for families and tourists who can walk freely. Second, it reduces noise and air pollution, which improves health. While some shop owners worry about access, I believe pedestrians spend more, so the change helps business too.

Tips for a higher level

Choose a side and commit — sitting on the fence scores lower. Use linking words (first, however, therefore) and leave time to check grammar. Try our free, AI-scored Writing practice for a 1-12 estimate.
