Australia: Student Visa (500) → 485 → PR

How studying in Australia can lead to permanent residency.

Subclass 500 student visa

The Subclass 500 lets you study at an Australian institution. You must show enrolment (CoE), funds, health insurance (OSHC) and meet the genuine student requirement. Work rights are capped during terms (about 48 hours per fortnight) and uncapped in breaks.

Temporary Graduate (485)

After your degree, the Subclass 485 lets graduates work in Australia. Note the age cap of 35 and that length depends on qualification and location (regional study extends it). Australian study plus local work experience strengthens a later skilled-visa case.

From 485 to PR

While on 485, you can obtain a skills assessment, sit an English test (MET or CELPIP), and lodge a SkillSelect EOI for 189/190/491 if your occupation is listed. Local experience and state nomination improve your chances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can studying in Australia lead to PR?

Yes — many graduates move from the 485 visa to a skilled visa (189/190/491) if their occupation is listed.

What is the 485 visa age cap?

The Subclass 485 has an age cap of 35 (unlike Canada's PGWP, which has no age limit).

Which English test do I need?

For skilled migration: MET or CELPIP General (DHA-approved). Practise free on PrepSettle.

Does a degree guarantee PR?

No. PR still requires an occupation on the lists, a skills assessment, English, and a competitive points/invitation outcome.

PrepSettle is an independent practice site, not a migration agent. Visa rules, occupation lists, points and fees change frequently — always confirm the current details on the official sources linked below (canada.ca, immi.homeaffairs.gov.au, studyaustralia.gov.au) before you decide.
